WARHORSE'S FIELD REVIEWS
Field Reports are offered here as a first-hand experience of someone who played at the field. I offer my humble opinion of the field so you, upon arriving at the new field for the first time, don't appear as a total newbie. Often, being prepared makes the difference between a day of paintball ... or a GREAT day of paintball.
My experiences at the fields follow.... please feel free to email me with your comments on
whether you feel the report is fair (based on your own experience) or needs an update.
The following field reports that are presented here were the experience of myself or the author who submitted the report. They are meant merely as a guide. On any day, a player may have a better or worse experience on any field. The reader should make his/her own decision about playing at a particular field.

Description: The place looked like its main business was hunting and fishing gear at one time. 1/3 of the store still has hunting and fishing related stuff, but the rest of the store is paintball, paintball, paintball. Lots of markers hanging from the walls for inspection and purchase. Lots of paintball gear for sale from barrels and remotes on through grenades and cammies. And paint cases and cases of you-name-it, they sell it. And reasonable prices for the paint . No field-paint-only prices. Actual retail prices. One of the few fields Ive found that allows walk-on paint, so, bring yer own, or buy it there.
Three fields of play. 2 wooded, and one speedball. The wooded fields are at the top of a hill, up the fire-break. The speedball field is exceptionally laid out.
Report:
We arrived around 9ish, geared up, and went into the store, where we purchased our CO2,
and paint, and our field fee. We chronod in, and hiked up the hill to join a
group that just finished with their first game of the day. We were 7 on 7 now, and
the next 2 games went pretty quick, with our team taking the flag both times. By now
a bunch more people were joining us, so a second field was opened, and added to the first,
making a much larger field, including the fire break. I recall being well bunkered
and firing down hill, holding off 4 or 5 guys trying to storm me while coming up the steep
hill.. heh heh They didnt stand a chance.
Most of the morning we played the two fields combined as one, until just before lunch,
when we went down to the speedball field. After raising the nets (field is pretty
close to the road) we were ready to begin. The field has some pretty decent
barricades and bunkers spread out over the approx. 80 yard by 50 yard field. The
field has a 25 degree slope to it, being on a hill, and both teams start out on opposite
sides at the 50 yard line. Your choice
sprint up the hill,
straight across, or down hill. Being an old WarHorse, I prefer to sprint up hill,
and fight my way down hill. I love the high ground.
Final notes:
Good judges kept the games moving, and honest. The store is more than that.
Very friendly folks, and very knowledgeable about markers and accessories. They
advertise, "Where the BIG BOYS go to by there TOYS". Repairs and parts are
available.
Current fees are $15 all day field pass with your own equipment. $40 for a Semi-auto
package rental. Not as much variety in terrain as some of the big fields, but I had
a great day of paintball
but then
Im and ole WarHorse, and I just love
to play the game.

Report: Arrived at 8:30am for the day's play. Me an Bushwhacker were walk-ons... we like being the scout for our group and trying new places for the first time. There was a walk on group of 25 or so.. and a private group playing on this date. We were registered, chrono'd and oriented to play our first game by 9:45. The judges were helpful; the field staff were friendly. 10 playing fields keep the day interesting. The fields are heavily wooded, so, if you like ambush and sniping you will enjoy playing here. The staff use ATV's to run supplies up to you if you run out of paint or air. C02 and HPA is available. Bring your lunch or.. they will take an order for deli delivery for ya. I found Ed to be very friendly and accomodating when we came back a few weeks later with a group of 25.
Final Notes: ET doesn't book more than 2 groups for a day. So, if you are thinking of playing here, you would be wise to call ahead to be sure that one of the groups is walk-ons. Other than that, I'd give ET a solid thumbs up rating based on their fields, rental equipment, and overall helpfulness of the entire staff. But then, I'm just an old Warhorse an I just ove to play the game anywhere, under any conditions, at any time.

Rental Markers: Tippmann Prolites; and a few Tippman Model 98's
Description: Ample parking and picnic tables are the first thing you'll notice as you pull up. The buildings are laid out with the Store/office on one side, and the equipment/air on the other. The ever-present Port-O-Potty will take care of the call to nature when it inevitably arrives. No food is immediately available, however, pizzas will be delivered in for you at your request. There is a store with a variety of gear at reasonable prices, as well as soda, water, and snacks. CO2 fills and HPA satisfied my 4500psi buddies. Repairs on-site are more than convenient if your marker breaks down during the day. This is a Field-Paint-Only field most of the time, but they do have special bring-yer-own days on Wednesdays and Sunday afternoons. There's even some "under-the-lights" playtime on Wednesdays and Fridays. No Age Limit to play, and, for those who are so inclined, they accept Visa and Mastercard.
Report: Bushwhacker and I played this field twice. Once in February, and once in August, both times as walk-ons on a Saturday. The winter day was about 30 degrees out. The 25 or so players seemed to take a long time to get organized, and although we arrived at 8:30am, we didn't play the first game until almost 10am. The players who were using the rental Prolites were having a lot of problems. C02 and the cold just don't mix... especially with heavily used rentals. I found the judges to be very young and not overly helpful during the game play... experience? or laxity? On the Summer play date, there was a smaller group, it being 100 degrees out that day (remember the heat wave of '99?) The judges seemed a little more 'into it'. The group was assembled and ready for play by 9:30 on this occasion. Nobody had gun troubles this time round, so, I guess it was the cold that caused all the problems on the previous date... which could be expected under those conditions. The fields were GREAT! Good bunker layout... good cover for snipers... structures.. foliage.. buildings... old fat trees ( I always look for FAT trees.. those skinny ones just don't give me the cover like they used to). The Citadel is a great field for defenders with a two towered structure connected by a walkway.
Final Notes: I give this field a good rating. Judges are friendly; prices are reasonable; fields are a good mix for the speedballers as well as the snipers. The field is located 10 minutes from McGuire Air Force Base, so, you are likely to be playing with a few people from there. All in all, I think you'll have a great day of paintball at Fireball Mountain... I did.. but then, I'm just an ole Warhorse, an I just love the game.

Description: (from their webpage)
Report: Our group of 12 arrived around 8:15, geared up, and was ready for the 'orientation' which was given promptly at 9am. The fields were steep hills, stone formations, and heavy woods. I really enjoyed playing on them, since I prefer forested fields... (I just love ambush.... ambush is evil ... heh heh) Notice the Safety description above. They say.. "safety is gently but firmly enforced". I am all for safety. In fact, safety should be number one... however, I think they go overboard. All day long, the staff Yelled AT people for even touching their goggles. Picture this: a cool autumn day... goggle fogging commonplace.. especially for the rental guys... during the game one of our guys asks the judge for a 'goggle wipe' .. the judge refused. Now.. you gotta picture this terrain... rock formations with cliffs... and this guy can't see at all. So, he slips his finger up under the goggle to wipe so he can see (didnt lift.. or remove the goggle) and wham.. the ref yells at him like he was a bad puppy and throws him out of the game.. yelling at him the whole time.. when he could have helped him in the first place. Then, the player has to wear a different colored armband to signify that he broke a rule. We called it the Detention Armband. We called them the Goggle Gestapo. The judges were biased. They knew somebody on the other team, and were caught on multiple occasions telling the guy where we were. Paint was expensive!! $127 for a case... wow.
Here's a report that was sent to me by Corey Z: I am writing this to let you know that NJ paintball Club sucks. My buddies and I arrived late because the directions that we were given from the "directions hotline" were way off and we got lost. When we finally got there, we were served at the checkin by a very rude lady. She didn't smile or say or anything. It was like being served by Cruella deVille. Anyway, we finally got up to the field (a brutal upward hike with lots of rocks to trip over) and awaited the next game at around 11:30. While waiting, we found out that the team we were put on consisted entirely of newbies while the opposing team was almost all experienced players, including several players from tournament teams. Needless to say, the team we were put on was slaughtered every game. The judges, while really cool guys, did nothing to change the teams. We played one game before making the dangerous hike back for lunch. Lunch there lasted over an hour!! The players were screaming to get back to the field but the judges wouldn't. We finally got back and played several more lopsided games before calling it quits. All in all, it wasn't a great day. I guess my biggest complaint was the poor service. There was no water at the fields or goggle washing stations. I was dying in the 95 degree heat. At fields like Splatter and Skirmish, the air fills are free and judges carry extra tanks for you to use while awaiting an air fill on yor own tank. Here you'd have to hike 20 minutes to get your tank filled and then 20 minutes back, plus pay the $4 for my 12 oz. tank. I guess if the price was better I wouldn't complain, but proball paint was $127/case and the field passes were $20 with your own equipment. The one good thing I can say about NJ Paintball Club is that they are very safety oriented, even though I feel the judge should have emphasized the importance of barrel plugs better. If NJ Paintball Club spent half the time on working on their field as they do on their website, it would be a top playing field.
Final Notes: Well, it's hard to give a thumbs down on a place that has such good terrain.. but.. service is important.. as well as fair play... so.. I give it a two thumbs down.. mine and Corey's. If you are going to pay those HIGH prices, they should assure that you're having a good time. They don't seem to care about that...
Postscript:
This was received by email in Feb 2001. I'm posting it here for you to read and make your own decision.
Warhorse,
I presume you are responsible for the lopsided and one way reports on our field... that is you and Cory Z? If so, I'd like to address some of the criticisms you make in your reports:
As an experienced player and someone who presumably speaks English, I'm sure that you heard the part during orientation where the manager says "the goggle seal can NEVER broken on your face. Goggles can not be lifted." Perhaps you presumed that like other fields, we were just paying lip service to the insurance regulations? We were not. We have NEVER had a eye injury in 12 years of operation and have NEVER had any insurance related problems. And we do not ever intend to. If the insurance regulations bother you, then complain to the insurance companies that cover paintball... not to the people who are enforcing those rules... and by the way... insuring that you don't lose your eye.
It never ceases to amaze me how you "experienced players" always think that you know how to run a field better than the managers and staff of the fields you visit! I have been in this sport for 16 years and a staff member of NJPC for 12 years. I have seen everything and done everything.. yet some snot nosed kid who has been playing for 18 months feels confident in the anonymity of there internet to second guess the regulations designed and enforced to protect his eyesight... the most precious sense God gave us! Anyone who does not like the way we run things is free to not come to NJPC, or complain to the manager, or request their money back at lunch time... none of which I presume you did?
Also, you accusation of ref bias is totally off base. This refs are HAND PICKED by the trustees of the club. They are ADULTS and TRAINED... a lot more than can be said for 99% of the refs at other fields. They don't take any nonsense from players and they don't cheat. If it was your perception that a ref was giving away positions to the opposing team, that was your perception... not necessarily the truth. Again, the thing to do is confront the ref and the manager at lunch time, and if dissatisfied, request a refund and leave. many times it has been my perception that I have hit a player with a paintball... and actually when a paintcheck is made... he is clean. I have seen refs give advice and tips to little kids, women, and total newbies, sometimes even during a game, if they think the players is
totally outclassed and about to be lit up. This was not a tournament game, it was a rec game. And while giving ADVICE to players is permitted, giving away POSITION of opponents is not.
$127 a case!!!!! Obviously you didn't do your homework very well before your visit. The price of a case of Proball was $107 a case.. if you took the time to pay for it in advance. And it was also $107 on the first and second Sunday of every month... the FULL $127 price id reserved for those a**holes who refuse to prepay and refuse to visit on walk-on day....
Now on to Cory Z's report:
Directions... if the *#*!! idiot had called BEFORE he was on the road he would have received a map by fax, a map by mail, or could have downloaded full directions and a map from the web site. The emergency directions hotline he mentions is just that... it's hard to give directions to someone in a moving car who is half asleep or half stoned and don't know what road they are on or what direction they are going.... I think you'll agree. Stacked teams... Cory obviously visited on a PREDATOR DAY... the first Sunday of every month when the home team plays rec ball as a TEAM against all comers. Regardless of how many newbies were on Cory's team, regardless of how they were getting slaughtered, refs in the morning do NOT have the authority to balance the teams, It is NJPC policy o play out the morning games as the teams stand to get a feel for the skills of the players and the balance... then adjust after lunch.
Dangerous terrain... how do I address this? We have AWESOME terrain that God made and that our landlords DO NOT PERMIT TO BE ALTERED... that means we can't flatten out the natural trails or build roads for ATVs... if
you are too whimpy to handle REAL terrain... play indoor or at Top Gun. Lunch... is ALWAYS an hour. The length of lunch is told to every one as they exit the filed... and on a 95% day (as Cory states) people probably NEEDED that hour too. Also, it doesn't matter how much whiners and complainers make noise... lunch is an HOUR so that the refs who have been running around doing lame paintchecks for crybabies all morning can rest and eat. If Cory wanted to play more games, he should have arrived at check in... not at one game before lunch.
Water on fields... water for washing goggles... hey... does this kid still live at home and have mommy and daddy wipe his a** when he takes a sh**? Does he actually expect our staff to hump gallons of WATER up those hills so that he can have a FREE drink and someplace to wash his goggles???? This isn't a friggin COUNTRY CLUB! Its the most awesome terrain Paintball Field in the metro area. We don't WANT cry babies and whimps who can't carry
a bottle of drinking water a 100 yards to play with us. Cory also complained about having to PAY for airfills... another person who spends so much time on the net that he doesn't even see what he reads... CO2 and air are FREE to ALL players who prepay for admission. Don't want to prepay? Then don't WHINE when you have to pay for your CO2. And as for refs carrying spare airtanks for players who run out of air... you MUST be kidding right? When I ref, I am certainly NOT going to carry 12 or 20 ounce air tanks around for the lame and lazy players who were too stupid or to cheap to get their tanks filled before they humped into the woods. COME ON!!! That sh** is the responsibility of the player, not the ref! next you'll want lounge chairs and flush toilets up in the woods. This is
paintball... not a video game! lastly, Cory says he was never informed about the seriousness of the barrel plug rule... you know, I have to blame the other field owners and managers and staff for much of this IGNORANCE from players who visit NJPC... because I know about the lack of safety and enforcement of regulations that is commonplace at other fields. Cory's BRAIN must be a little fried if he FAILS to understand the necessity of a barrel plug in a gun when there are other people standing around without goggles on. I mean... isn't it just COMMON SENSE? If Cory and his late sleeping friends had arrived at check-in and heard a FULL orientation, all this is covered. It is also written plainly on the waiver. It is also posted all over the parking area, and it is also told even in secondary orientations and repeated ad nausium by the refs before and after every goggle break- that BARREL PLUGS ARE REQUIRED IN ALL GUNS AT ALL TIMES UNLESS YOUR REF INDICATES OTHERWISE... ESPECIALLY IN THE PARKING AREA, AND ESPECIALLY DURING GOGGLE BREAKS. Is this safety rule... for YOUR safety (not mine) so hard to comprehend?
In closing, please do one of the following...
1) post this letter in your reports column as a rebuttal for the lopsided comments you feature on your website about our playing site, or...
2) please remove ALL MENTION of our playing site from your website, including links, posting, and listings
Feel free to write back if you feel the need to...

Semi - Automag (230-250fps)
Description:
If you like speedball, you may want to consider Planet Paintballs indoor
arena. Theres only 1 field of play, but, it was large enough for our group of
16 to have some fast action without getting in each others way. I would imagine that
more than 8 or so on a team would get a little crowded. The field has assorted
bunkers, sandy floor, and observation windows for onlookers. They run 2 hour
sessions, so, your entrance fee covers 2 hours of play. My group played 8 or 9 games
in our session. Although field-paint-only is the custom here, I was told that on
Monday and Wednesday evenings you can bring-yer-own.
Report:
We arrived at 5:30 for our 2 hour session, which was to begin at 6PM. There
didnt seem to be a whole lot of organization. There was some confusion about
our reservations, ( I was never mailed a copy of the confirmation as promised) and
although the on-duty employees werent too helpful, the folks in charge straightened
things out quick. A too-small staging area kinda crammed together people
from the ending session and the beginning session. In fact, for those who were
renting equipment, they had to wait for the session to end so that markers, masks, and
even camo overalls could be redistributed (a washer/dryer on site made quick work of
getting clean camo to the waiting group). Our session didnt actually begin
until almost 6:30 by the time the group was outfitted, and, it ended at 8PM anyway.
I brought along my trusty Tippman Carbine 68, and was barely able to crono down to the
maximum 250fps. Compressed air is the propellant in supply here, and, the fill on my
20oz can only gave me about 500 shots!
The quality of the Automags was mixed. A few had no problems at all; a few did. One guy had to exchange his marker 4 times before he got one that was reliable. They seemed to be heavily played, and, since the sandy floor was a very fine sand, there was grit inside every part of the gun which may have attributed to the problems. Actually, by the end of the session, I had grit in all my equipment too. My wife didnt play this time, but sat by the observation window. Her only comment was that the toilet facilities were terrible.
Final notes:
My advice would be not too set your expectations too high if you want to play
here. If you are looking for some fast action, and a couple of hours of paintball fun, and
are willing to put up with some minor inconveniences, give it a try. I had a pretty
good time, but then, Im an old war horse who just loves the game regardless of
where I play. Planet paintball has only been open for a few months, and is
experiencing growing pains. In conversation with the owner, he mentioned that they
were going to make some improvements soon.

Report:
A sunny Saturday in August
me and my buddy Bushwacker wanted to try out our new
2-way radios, so we headed off to Top Gun, one of the oldest most respected fields in New
Jersey. Did you know that paintball in NJ became legal at Top Gun 10 years ago, and
became legal because of their efforts? Well.. enough of the history lesson. We
checked in at 8:45, paid our fees, geared up, chronod in and were ready to play by
9:30. There appeared to be 2 groups of players
pump/beginner class, and
semi/open/hi-tech.
We had 15 to 20 players on each side using a variety of markers from rental on up to Angels, and everything in between. Experience of players seemed just as varied, with young and older newbies, as well as a mix of experienced players. The fields were sandy floored and lightly wooded - a mix of pines and other trees - with bunkers and structures sprinkled throughout. I found the fields to be on the smallish side, especially since there were so many people playing. At times, it was difficult to move without bumping into one of your team there are only so many bunkers and trees. We played 5 games before we broke for lunch, and then 4 more after lunch to finish the day. The tent areas between games have water and provide a safe place to remove your goggles.
Final notes:
The place is loaded with paintball history. The actual markers from 10 years ago are
hanging on the wall opposite the Pro-shop. The Pro-shop has everything - markers,
parts, accessories- and expertise to go with it. There are 10 fields, with a variety of
terrain, although we only played 3 of them over the course of the day. It would have
been a far better day if they would have combined a couple of them to accommodate the
large number of players, but not too many people seemed to mind a whole lot. The
play was aggressive enough that player eliminations made room to move eventually.
All in all, I had a great day of paintball
but then, Im just an old WarHorse
and I always do.

$90/case 2000 rounds, Diablo ** 4 Wooded Fields, 1 speedball**
Report: Arrived as walk-ons to play on a date when Paintball Depot was sharing fields with AllStar. It was a busy place, half dedicated to Depot players, the other half Allstar. The fields were laid out well, heavily wooded. Some up on the the hill... others near the office area (less hiking). All the fields were worth playing on. Don't look for buildings like forts or towers, there aren't any.. just good wooded terrain. The speedball field had a tower in one corner.. got some good head shots on the guys upstairs.. heh heh. Bushwhacker and me been back to AllStar a couple of times since that first one. Usually had groups of 10 on 10 with a mix of experienced and novice players. I don't mind playing with rookies... and I don't mind taking the time to show the ones willing to learn. The Staff at Xfire (name change recently) are very helpful.. No compressed air fills beyond 2200psi as of this date... that's a drawback. Lots of trips down the hill for air. I like to throw a lot of paint... especially when me an Bushwhacker split up onto opposite sides to even out the teams. It always seems that me an him end up facing each other ... I really can't say that one of us gets the best of the other on a regular basis... like a clash of the titans.
Final notes: I would rate X-Fire even higher if they had air fills to 4500psi, but even with that, I give em a good rating. Check 'em out. It's close by.. and reasonably priced. Make sure you call ahead tho... Carlo doesn't always open if the weather is gonna be bad.. or if there's not too many people booking.
